Limited Edition Lunar Tartan at Rose's Wardrobe

Lunar Tartan was designed and woven in Langholm, 1972 for Neil Armstrong’s visit to the town. 

Now, Rose’s Wardrobe has its hands on a replica piece of the Lunar Tartan that was produced in homage to the 50th Anniversary of the moon landing last year. 

LUNAR TARTAN

Langholm, Scotland is Rose’s Wardrobes hometown - and also Neil Armstrong’s. In March 1972, Neil Armstrong was invited to Langholm to become the first freeman of the town. Langholm is the seat of the Armstrong clan and so it’s Neil’s ancestral home. 

To celebrate, three mohair stoles and a length of tartan were produced. Janet, Neil Armstrong’s wife, was gifted one of the stoles - which she promptly put on due to the chilly weather in Scotland (pictured below)!

The local designs were initially developed in 1970 by Ian Maxwell, a local Langholm mill owner. It comprised of black, brown and grey to represent the lunar rock and dust brought back to earth from the Apollo 11 mission and the red flash of colour is for the rocket flame.

Langholm is known for it’s mills (you can read about how Rose’s Wardrobe is trying to bring Langholm’s history into its future here), and the bespoke tartan from the textile town to Neil Armstrong made a fitting gift. 

All these years later, Rose’s Wardrobe is celebrating the Man on the Moon once again. Three made to order “Rosie” skirts and a handful of “Bonnie Headbands” will be made from our limited edition Lunar Tartan.

THE ROSIE SKIRT IN LUNAR TARTAN

Our classic Vintage Circle Skirt named after Granny Rosie has had an out of this world makeover. The half circle, full volume skirt is now available in the tartan made to celebrate Neil Armstrong’s visit to Langholm in 1972. The limited edition Lunar Tartan fabric is 100% wool. The lining is an organic black bamboo silk. 

The Rosie Skirt features a flattering deep waistband, in seam pockets, and a centre back concealed zip. 

All skirts are made to order, so please allow 1 - 2 weeks for your skirt. If you do need it in a hurry, you can always get in touch and Rose’s Wardrobe will do it’s best to accommodate your request.

THE BONNIE HEADBAND IN LUNAR TARTAN

The Bonnie Headband is having a moon landing makeover. The Bonnie headband features a detachable bow, giving you two vintage looks in one. It’s currently available in Tartan and 100% wool fabrics.

Rose’s Wardrobe was founded by Emma and Leanne after both having over 12 years of experience between them working in high street, vintage inspired, and fashion supplier backgrounds. The inspiration from Rose’s Wardrobe derived from Emma and Leanne’s muses - their grandmas and great grandma - Patricia, Edna, and Rose.
