Care & repair

Care & Repair

One of the easiest ways to reduce your impact on the planet is to care for the clothes you own. Below are some of our top tips for extending the lives of your clothes.

Storage

To keep your wardrobe in top condition, make sure that your clothes are getting enough space - not packed into drawers or squished tightly on hangers. Allowing airflow in your storage spaces will reduce the chance of mould or moths damaging your clothes.

Washing

Before washing a garment consider if it's actually dirty - if you've only worn it once and it looks and smells fresh, there's no need. When you are washing clothes, there are a few things you can do to reduce energy use and pollution:

  • Choose a lower heat setting and/or a shorter cycle - this will use less energy and reduce wear or damage to your clothes

  • Choose a more sustainable detergent - Our Simple Gestures has great advice on this!

  • Air dry on a clothes rack or outside on a washing line whenever you can

Mending

Damaged clothes can still have plenty of life left in them! If you're unsure about mending, we love the free tutorials on Repair What You Wear. If there's a specific Rose's Wardrobe piece you'd like repair advice about, get in touch and we'll do our best to help.

End of Life

If you fall out of love with a garment and it's still in good condition, consider passing it on to a friend, donating it to a charity shop or selling it online for someone else to enjoy.

If your garment is damaged beyond repair, there are many recycling centres and donation points which will take it for scrap - have a google to see what's available in your area. If you prefer a DIY approach, damaged fabrics can be used as rags, upcycled into a patchwork item, used as stuffing, the possibilities are endless!
