Rose's Wardrobe Interview Stacey from @gobbleknoll_vintage

Grace Scott

Rose’s Wardrobe chat to modern vintage muse, friend and model for RW, Stacey, from @gobbleknoll_vintage about what, when and why she started wearing vintage fashion.

WELCOME TO ROSE’S WARDROBE! PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF...

“Hi there! My name is Stacey and I live in Northampton, UK. I work as a pharmacy dispensary assistant; I enjoy reading and writing, spending time with my two cute children (Porridge and Rhubarb - both of which are Stacey’s cats!), gaming, and academics.”

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO VINTAGE INSPIRED FASHION?

“I think I’ve always admired the vintage silhouette - particularly the 1940s. There’s something about the quality of the clothing, the way they were made to last (almost) indefinitely, and the elegant styling that I’ll always admire.”

WHEN DID YOU START DRESSING VINTAGE?

“I always loved the aesthetic, and always wanted to try, but I was never brave enough. In May 2019, I just decided to go for it! I put my hair in curlers and haven’t looked back since.”

CAN YOU REMEMBER YOUR FIRST VINTAGE/VINTAGE INSPIRED PIECE?

“It was a black, 1940s beret-style hat that I bought from a vintage event at Alexandra Palace!”

WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR PEOPLE TO BEGIN THEIR VINTAGE INSPIRED CAPSULE WARDROBE?

“Depending on your budget - and you don’t have to break your bank to achieve a good vintage look - I’d look for a mix of modern and true vintage pieces around a base colour pallette. Things like blouses, trousers, dresses and skirts, can be styled around one another to create a capsule wardrobe.”

“Shoes and accessories complete the look, and there are many ways to create a fantastic, authentic looking vintage wardrobe just from studying original images/photos and matching them to modern alternatives.

Initially, you may feel the need to be completely authentic and spend far too much time and money trying to achieve that. Believe me when I say that from personal experience: that’s neither realistic or fun!”

HAS THERE BEEN ANY NEGATIVE RESPONSE TO DRESSING VINTAGE, AND WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PART ABOUT IT?

“No! I’ve been quite lucky in that regard. No time for it - life’s too short to listen to that.

My favourite thing about dressing vintage - the confidence! I wish I’d tried it sooner.”

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE VINTAGE INSPIRED ITEMS IN YOUR WARDROBE AT THE MOMENT?

“My gorgeous Lillias blouse from Rose’s Wardrobe.  Some Victorian inspired leather boots from Jo Bears and I’ve got my eye on some new plus-fours from The House of Foxy. “

DO YOU FEEL YOUR STYLE HAS EVOLVED SINCE DRESSING VINTAGE?

“Absolutely! I enjoy creating outfits the more I wear them; I started with a strict want to wear anything 1940s style - now, while I’m still in love with the 40s look - I’m interested in injecting some gothic, Victoriana vibes. Think Sophie Hatter, but edgy!”

DO YOU HAVE ANY TOP TIPS FOR SOMEONE WANTING DRESS VINTAGE?

”Do exactly what you want with it. Be comfortable. Don’t fall into the pressure of looking a certain way just to please others. Don’t worry about looking authentic, that’s not possible, in the words of the awesome Bernadette Banner: be historically adequate, it’s much more fun!”

THE TEAM

Rose’s Wardrobe was founded by Emma and Leanne after both having over 12 years of experience between them working in high street, vintage inspired, and fashion supplier backgrounds. The inspiration from Rose’s Wardrobe derived from Emma and Leanne’s muses - their grandmas and great grandma - Patricia, Edna, and Rose. The aim is to produce replicas of the beautiful clothes their grandmas wore, using colours, styles and prints from the 1940’s through to the 1960’s. You can connect with Rose’s Wardrobe on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. Have a look at where Rose’s Wardrobe will be here. Read our sustainability statement. Or, shop the collection
